How to choose a dive center and instructor, what to ask before you pay, and what signs should send you elsewhere

You already know which course you want. Now comes the decision that really determines what you're going to learn, and it isn't the agency: it's who teaches you, how many people will be in the group, and how many hours you'll actually spend in the water.

In this article you'll see why the dive center matters more than the agency, the six questions worth asking before you pay, what the price should include and what usually gets left out, the signs that suggest you should look elsewhere, and how to decide between training close to home or while traveling.

The same course, with the same standard and the same certification card at the end, can be solid training or a three-day formality. The difference is decided before you pay, by asking.

The dive center matters more than the agency

This is the conclusion that runs through this entire category, and it's worth repeating here, where it applies: the large agencies set similar minimum standards and their certifications are mutually recognized, as the article on agency recognition explains. What actually varies between two courses isn't the logo, it's the execution.

Within the same standard there's room for groups of four and groups of eight, courses with four pool sessions and courses with two, instructors who correct your posture from the first minute and instructors who stick to the mandatory skills checklist.

That's why the right order of decisions is: first, which course you need; then, which dive center will teach it well; and the agency as a consequence of the first two. Choosing the agency first and the dive center second is doing it backwards.

There's a reasonable exception: if you already have several courses with one agency and a trusted club nearby, continuity has value of its own. But it's a preference, not a requirement, and switching between recreational courses carries no penalty.
