NAUI: one of the oldest, and the one that lets the instructor decide

A nonprofit association where the standard is a floor, not a fixed script

It is one of the oldest agencies in the industry, operates as a nonprofit association, and its motto has said the same thing for sixty years: safety through education. Its most distinctive trait, though, is what it lets its instructors do.

In this article you'll see where NAUI comes from, what the academic freedom it gives its instructors consists of and why it's a double-edged sword, how its certification ladder is organized, and in which contexts it remains the reference.

It's the agency that best illustrates an important idea: that the training standard is a minimum, not a ceiling, and that who teaches you can matter more than which logo is on the certificate.

Where it comes from

NAUI was founded in the United States in 1960, when scuba diving had been within the public's reach for barely a decade thanks to the invention described in the article on the Aqua-Lung. It was the country's first national organization of diving instructors and the mold that, directly or indirectly, almost every other agency came from.

It was born, and remains, a nonprofit association governed by its own member instructors. That structural difference from commercial agencies explains a good number of its decisions: there's no pressure to maximize material sales or to multiply the catalog of short specialty courses.

Its size today is much smaller than the two giants, but its recognition is total, and its prestige in certain circles (scientific, academic, and public-institution training) remains high.

Historically it has had a notable presence in institutional and research diving programs, where the buying criterion isn't commercial convenience but the depth of the training.
