SDI and TDI: the house that started with technical diving

A recreational agency born from a technical one, which teaches with a dive computer from day one

Almost every recreational agency added a technical line once technical diving became fashionable. This one did it the other way around: the technical side came first, and the recreational side was born afterward, carrying its DNA.

In this article you'll see how SDI and TDI split the work within the same house, why its recreational path is taught with a dive computer from day one instead of tables, what certifications it offers that others don't, and what the technical progression that sets it apart looks like.

If your horizon includes decompression, gas blends, or rebreathers, the agency you start with stops being interchangeable: here the continuity between recreational and technical diving is direct, rather than a jump between two different worlds.

Two brands, one house

TDI was founded in the nineties, at the height of the technical diving boom, to give formal structure to what until then had been learned in a fairly artisanal way among caves and deep wrecks, as the article on the history of technical diving explains. SDI was born shortly after as its recreational sister.

There's a third brand under the same roof, dedicated to public safety diving: rescue teams, firefighters, police. They share an administrative structure and common standards, but each covers its own ground.

What's interesting about that order of appearance is that the recreational side was designed already knowing where it could lead. The progression from SDI to TDI is meant as continuity, not a jump between two different philosophies.

By volume it's smaller than the two giants, but its certification is just as widely recognized: any dive center in the world accepts it, through the same equivalency mechanism described in the article on recognition between agencies.
