Pulau Weh

Indonesia's northwestern tip, with volcanic vents on the seafloor

The bottom bubbles: it's volcanic gas passing through the sand.

At the northwesternmost point of Indonesia, off the tip of Sumatra, there's a volcanic island where the seafloor bubbles. It's not an effect: they're vents releasing volcanic gas through the sand, and you dive among them.

In this profile you'll find out what the island's underwater vents are and what diving near them involves, what else it offers (current-swept wall, wreck, macro) when to go, and what level each area requires.

It's one of the few accessible destinations where you can directly observe underwater volcanic activity, and the diving gateway to the archipelago's western tip, very rarely visited.

Geography and access

Pulau Weh is a small volcanic island off the northwestern tip of Sumatra, at the point where the Andaman Sea meets the Strait of Malacca.

The island is geologically active, and that activity shows underwater: in certain shallow areas, volcanic gas escapes through the sediment forming continuous columns of bubbles, and the water around them is noticeably warmer.

These vents create a peculiar microenvironment, with altered water chemistry and an adapted community distinct from that of the surrounding reef.

The rest of the topography combines walls dropping toward deep water, current-battered pinnacles, shallow reefs, and volcanic sand bottoms with macro life.

Access is by domestic flight to Banda Aceh, the capital of Aceh province,, followed by a ferry to the island. The diving infrastructure is small, and the destination receives few international visitors.
