Crystal-clear freshwater cenotes above a Caribbean reef

Beneath the jungle of Yucatán lies the most extensive submerged cave system known on the planet. You enter through wells opened in the rock; the water is fresh and so transparent it's hard to believe you're actually wet.
In this profile you'll find how the cenotes formed, what tells a cavern apart from a cave and why that distinction decides whether you can enter or not, what a halocline is, what the coastal reef is like, when to go, and what training you need.
It's the largest submerged cave system known in the world, and also the aquifer the entire peninsula depends on, which turns every drop of contamination into everyone's problem.
Geography and access
The Yucatán Peninsula is a slab of porous limestone with no surface rivers. All the rainwater filters through and flows underneath, dissolving the rock over millions of years.
That dissolution carved out a system of flooded galleries spanning hundreds of connected kilometers, the most extensive known on the planet.
When a gallery's ceiling collapses, an open-air well appears: that's a cenote, the entry point into the system.
Fresh rainwater floats above salt water that enters from the sea. The contact surface between the two is called a halocline, and crossing it makes the image blur as if the water were oil.
There's a legal and safety distinction that's key to this destination: a cavern is the zone where natural daylight reaches and the exit stays visible; a cave is everything beyond that. Cave diving requires specific training, and that's non-negotiable.
Along the coast, facing the cenotes, runs the Mesoamerican Reef, with conventional tropical reef diving.
Access is easy: an international airport on the coast and short road transfers to the cenotes.
